Frequently Asked Questions

Submissions & Contests

What kind of work do you accept?
Each contest or open call will list its own specific guidelines, so always double-check the details before submitting.

Can I submit more than one story?
Yes! Some contests or calls allow up to two stories in one entry (see guidelines). You can also enter as many times as you’d like, but each entry requires its own fee.

Do you accept simultaneous submissions?
Yes. If your piece is accepted elsewhere, please withdraw it from consideration.

Do you accept reprints?
No. We only consider unpublished work (including work not posted on blogs, newsletters, or social media).

Do you accept AI-generated work?
No. AI-generated submissions will be disqualified without refund.

Editing or Withdrawing Submissions

Can I edit my submission after I’ve sent it?
No. All submissions are final once entered. Please double-check your file before submitting.

What if I notice a typo or small mistake in my story?
Typos happen. A small error won’t disqualify you or automatically hurt your chances. Please double-check your file before submitting, but know we’re reading for the strength of your writing, not perfection in spelling or formatting. If you want to send a fully corrected version, you’ll need to submit it as a new entry with a new entry fee.

What if my story gets accepted somewhere else?
You can withdraw your submission at any time, but entry fees are non-refundable.

Eligibility

Who can enter?
The contest is open internationally to writers age 18 or older, provided PayPal is available in their country and they are not located in a region restricted by U.S. law.

Fees & Payments

How much does it cost to enter?
Entry fees vary by contest or call. See the specific guidelines for current rates.

How do I pay?
We accept payments through PayPal and credit/debit card.

Are fees refundable?
Fees are non-refundable, except in the rare case that we cancel a contest before results are announced.

Judging & Publication

How are submissions judged?
Our editors read all entries. Shortlisted work may be sent anonymously to final judges (for contests).

What are the prizes?
Prizes differ depending on the contest. Check the current contest page for full details.

When will I hear back?
Timelines vary. Each contest or call will note its expected response or announcement date.

Do I keep the rights to my work?
Yes, you keep full copyright. If published, you grant Bow & Chariot a non-exclusive license to publish your work, promote it (including short excerpts), and archive it on our site.

Can I publish my piece elsewhere afterward?
Yes. Since we only ask for a non-exclusive license, you’re free to publish your piece again after it appears with us.

Will my name and bio be published with my work?
Yes, unless you request otherwise when your piece is accepted.

Technical & Logistics

What file formats do you accept?
Word (.doc or .docx) or PDF.

Can I withdraw or edit my submission?
Yes. If your piece is accepted elsewhere, please withdraw it. If you need to resubmit a corrected version, withdraw and then submit again.

What if I have trouble submitting?
